We began by disconnecting the existing toilet, keeping it safe for reinstallation. The floor tiles were carefully removed, followed by the vanity, countertop, and vanity lighting. The existing shower and vanity mirror were also removed to create a clean slate. During this phase, we considered minor plumbing adjustments, including potentially relocating the toilet drain by one inch, to ensure proper alignment with the new layout.
Framing the New Shower – Function Meets Style
With the demolition complete, we focused on constructing a functional and visually appealing shower area. The existing shower width was slightly reduced by 2–3 inches to optimize space and improve layout. We framed a new shower with a dam (not walk-in) and added a shower bench, providing comfort and convenience. For safety, we installed backing for a grab bar, ensuring support for the homeowners. We also framed a shampoo box to provide a designated storage space for toiletries.
Plumbing & Drainage – Reliable Performance
Before tiling and finishing, we installed the plumbing systems to support both functionality and longevity. The customer-provided single function shower valve was installed, and a square drain was positioned strategically for optimal water flow. The shower pan was hot-mopped to create a waterproof and durable base. Any slight adjustments to the toilet drain were also completed during this phase.
Shower Walls – Custom Tiles & Expert Installation
The shower walls were lined with black paper and metal lath, which were then floated with cement and leveled to ensure a perfectly smooth and sturdy surface. We installed 12 x 24 porcelain tiles from Arizona Tile – Invictus White Polished on the shower walls (allowance: $3.00/SQF), creating a bright and timeless look. The shower pan was finished with Unicorn Tile – Sage Smoke 2" Hex 12-3/4" x 11" porcelain tiles (allowance: $5.00/SQF), combining elegance with slip-resistant functionality. All grout lines were carefully sealed to prevent moisture issues and ensure long-lasting performance.
Vanity & Countertop Installation – Seamless Design
We installed a 2 LF customer-provided vanity cabinet, which came fully assembled with a pre-fabricated quartz countertop and integrated sink. This choice allowed for a sleek, cohesive look with minimal onsite fabrication.
The vanity was complemented with customer-provided faucets and handles, creating a unified, modern aesthetic. Above the vanity, we installed the customer-provided mirror and vanity light, ensuring both style and functionality.
Bathroom Flooring – Durable and Elegant
To unify the space, we installed 12 x 24 porcelain floor tiles from Tile World – Granity Nero (allowance: $3.00/SQF). These tiles provide durability and an elegant finish, perfectly complementing the shower and vanity design.
Shower Door, Electrical, and Lighting – Modern Convenience
We installed a sliding shower glass door (not frameless) to create a functional entryway while keeping the design clean. Electrical upgrades included the installation of one GFCI on the right-hand side of the vanity, two 6″ LED can lights, one dimmer, an outlet for the bidet, and replacement of one existing switch. These improvements provide both safety and modern functionality.
Final Touches – Drywall & Painting
Finally, we patched and textured drywall in selected areas to prepare for painting. We then painted the bathroom walls and ceiling, leaving the door and casing unpainted per customer request. These finishing touches brought a polished and cohesive look to the newly remodeled hall bathroom.
